When planning our stay in Sri Lanka, the first thing we checked was the coworking spaces in Ahangama. Knowing that the island still experiences power cuts, we needed to ensure we had a reliable alternative in case there was no electricity at home. Luckily, Ahangama has grown exponentially in recent years, and some proper coworking spaces have opened their doors, including Nets Coworking, which launched in 2023. Nets was our first choice due to its solar panels, but I did some more research and checked the other coworking spaces in Anhanagma as well. From solar-powered offices to coworking spaces tucked within restaurants, the options became diverse in the last years. Get ready to find your perfect balance of work and surf in the tropical paradise!

1. Nets Coworking

Location: GoogleMaps

Nestled in Ahangama, this coworking and coliving space opened its doors in the summer of 2023, offering the first proper coworking place in town. The interior design is cosy and thoughtfully arranged, providing proper office desks and chairs as well as an AC in the main coworking area. With the inclusion of solar panels, the space manages to maintain power even during local power cuts, ensuring uninterrupted workdays – something you will appreciate a lot after your first full-day power cut in Sri Lanka.

Nets Coworking offers three compact call booths, which are ideal for calls or focused work. However, booking in advance via WhatsApp is a must. The monthly pass includes 16 hours of usage. Alternatively, individual bookings are available at 3 euros per hour. Just beware: there’s no AC, only a fan, which might not be enough on hot days – after all, you will be working from a tropical jungle ;).

Operating 24/7, access is priced from 9 EUR per day to 150 EUR per month, including beverages (coffee, tea, water). There are no dedicated desks which means seating is first-come, first-served, although “reserved” tags are provided for regular visitors. Need a second screen? They’ve got one monitor available for rent.

The closest surf spot is around 400 m away (The Cove). There is a shower in the coworking space, so you can use it before your next meeting – just make sure your hair is dry! 😀 And if you get hungry, there are several nearby restaurants that deliver food to Nets.

The staff at Nets Coworking is super friendly and helpful. Their decision to employ female Sri Lankan staff exclusively adds a wonderful local touch and the occasional community events create a welcoming vibe. On the downside, the pool is reserved for coliving guests, and the access road is tricky—make sure you’re confident on a scooter to avoid any bumps on the way!

This is the coworking we chose during our stay as an alternative in case of power cuts. Back in Feb-March 2024 this was the only working with solar panels in Ahangama.

Pros: Cons:
solar panels
office furniture
3 call booths
nice vibe and community
beautiful interior design
open 24/7
the pool is only for co-living guests
no dedicated desks
the call booths have no AC
the access road is in bad condition

2. Focus Hub

Location: GoogleMaps

Focus Hub is the second coworking space in Ahangama, and it’s a pretty sweet spot. Just off the main road, it’s easy to find and even easier to park your scooter, thanks to the spacious parking lot out front. Inside, there’s plenty of room to spread out, with a mix of wooden and office-style furniture that’s both cosy and practical. Need to jump on a call? The two call booths have your back. Collaborating with a team? The meeting room is ready and waiting.

What sets Focuse Hub apart is its location. Right in the heart of Ahangama, it’s just a stone’s throw from great surf spots and tasty restaurants—perfect for sneaking in a lunch break or catching a few waves after work. When I visited, it was calm, quiet, and free from the usual hustle, which made it ideal for getting stuff done. Back in early 2024, they didn’t have solar panels, but by October, they’d sorted that out (accordingly to their Instagram account), meaning fewer disruptions during power cuts. At just 2,000 LKR a day (around €6.50) or 35,000 LKR a month (€114), it’s a solid deal for digital nomads on a budget.

Pros: Cons:
call booths & a meeting room
office chairs
solar panels
located in the center of Ahangama
food and drinks available on-site
no outdoor space
a bit used interior

3. Kalatmaka (Ceylon Café)

Location: GoogleMaps

Ceylon Café in Ahangama isn’t just about great coffee and a cosy guesthouse – it’s also home to a small yet functional coworking space. While the café and guesthouse steal the spotlight, this addition makes it a handy spot for getting some work done in between your tropical adventures.

The main coworking area features a large table with comfy office chairs, seating up to six people. Heads up: there’s no AC here, just fans – so if you’re sensitive to the tropical heat, this might not be your top pick. But if you don’t mind working outside, the terrace workspace is a game-changer, offering stunning views of palm trees and the lush garden. At just 1,500 LKR (5 USD or 5 EUR) per day, it’s the most budget-friendly coworking space in town. And with Kabalana Beach right across the street, it’s the perfect spot to balance work with a quick surf or lunch break on the beach.

Pros: Cons:
some office chairs
food and drinks on site
super close to Kabalana beach
good attractive price
big outside space available
no AC
no call booths
no community vibe

4. Samba

Location: GoogleMaps

Samba is a cosy little gem just outside the busy center of Ahangama, tucked along the main road. It’s not just a coworking space – it’s a cool mix of a restaurant, guesthouse, and workspace all rolled into one. Though the coworking area is on the smaller side, it’s got the essentials covered: comfy office chairs, sturdy tables, and even a monitor. Add in efficient air conditioning, and you’ve got a setup that’s perfect for getting some work done in comfort. Plus, with great food on-site and its proximity to The Cove surf spot, it’s ideal for grabbing lunch or catching some waves before starting your day (especially if you’re working European hours).

Back in February 2024, using the coworking space was a free perk if you were eating at the restaurant. By March, they introduced a 3,000 LKR (10 EUR) fee, but here’s the good part – you can use it as credit for food and drinks at the restaurant.

Since Samba leans more toward being a restaurant and guesthouse than a full-fledged coworking space, they don’t offer weekly or monthly passes. But for a day of work paired with good vibes and even better food, Samba is a great choice.

Pros: Cons:
good AC
office furniture
the fee can be used in the restaurant
food and drinks on-site
super small space
no weekly or monthly packages
open only during the restaurant opening hours

5. Moochies

Phone: +94765385910
Social media: Instagram
Location: GoogleMaps

Fresh on the scene as of April 2024, Moochies combines a restaurant, boutique shop, and a coworking space. Sleek and modern, with prices leaning towards the higher end. But hey, the avocado toast? Totally worth it – it was the best one we ate in Sri Lanka. Sure, the daily fee of 3500 LKR (11,50 EUR) might raise some eyebrows in this part of the world, but here’s the thing: you get a 2000 rs credit for food and coffee.

Now, this might be very important for the work-from-anywhere crowd: the tables are nice, the interior is very appealing and there is an AC. But those chairs? They’re the same ones from the restaurant – not exactly what you expect from a coworking space. Plus you need to keep in mind that Moochies follows the restaurant opening hours. Despite it not being the best place for a marathon working sesh you will for sure enjoy its delicious food and fancy vibe.

Pros: Cons:
fancy and modern style
food and drinks on-site (delicious!)
quite expensive
no weekly or monthly packages
open only during the restaurant opening hours
no office furniture

Conclusion: Coworking spaces in Ahangama

As of 2024, Ahangama has established itself as a growing destination for digital nomads. Two proper coworking spaces lead the way: Nets Coworking and Focus Hub. Both offer reliable internet, proper office furniture, air conditioning, and solar panels. This ensures a productive environment even during power cuts. Additionally, several cafes and guesthouses in Ahangama provide less professional coworking setups. These can be a good alternative for a more casual workday. Together, these additions mark a significant step forward for Ahangama’s coworking scene. They offer remote workers and digital nomads a solid base to combine work and the laid-back coastal lifestyle.

PS. Although we booked a monthly pass in Nets, in the end, we worked for 3 months from home and didn’t need to go to a coworking. Our home had all we needed. If you want to know how to find accommodation in Ahangama for longer stays, check this article [soon available].
